On January 22, 2025, the portrait was hung in the Senate Chamber.
In his 48 years of service in the South Carolina Senate, he served for 12 years as Chairman of the Senate Education Committee, and also served on the Finance Committee, Banking and Insurance Committee and Labor, Commerce and Industry Committee. He was well known for his work in education - both K-12 and higher education, finance and oversight, as well as economic development and transportation.
